Holiday Inn Express
Amsterdam
Caransa Groep and Borealis Hotel Group invited Mulderblauw to design the new Holiday Inn Express Amsterdam – City Hall.
With the construction of this new hotel development, the spatial void on the Valkenburgerstraat has been filled up. As a result, the appearance of this important street between the city centre of Amsterdam and the IJtunnel, has become a coherent unity once again. Construction of the hotel was completed in May of 2018.
Craftmanship
The first of the three constructive volumes has an eye-catching facade on the front side of the building.
Ton-sur-ton
This facade has a clear and traditional appearance, due to the light colour of the bricks and the wooden glass frames. The base plinth consists of warm grey concrete, which results in a harmonious ton-sur-ton facade.
Contrary to the seven-storey construction on the front side of the hotel, the centre volume is only two storeys high. Designing a lower part in the centre of the building results in more light and space for the houses that are located on the Nieuwe Grachtje.
Sleek
The facades in the heart of the ensemble were an opportunity to create a surprising contrast in the design of the hotel. Applying zinc welt in warm metallic tones, causes a friendly and calm, yet sleek appearance.
The rear part of the hotel is located on the waterfront and offers a view of the Uilenburgergracht. The three components are connected to one another by means of glass bridge sections. The height of the building is in line with the surrounding urban developments, but the bright brickwork makes the design stand out and captures the attention of passers-by.
